What books should I donate?
To get the most out of maktaba.org, you should choose books you have read and loved, so you can connect with readers in Africa who share your interests. Please do not send books that you did not like or have not read. Transporting and managing books is time consuming and expensive for our organization. Please ensure our efforts are well-spent by sending only books you know are worthwhile. The most requested areas are illustrated children’s books, young adult novels, bestsellers, and college textbooks. Please send your favorites!
What kind of donations do you accept?
We accept financial and in-kind contributions of all types. We are currently seeking donations of:
Books
School supplies
Food
Sports equipment, games and toys
Computers, laptops and tablets
The most valuable thing you can donate is your time. Elimu Yetu is currently seeking volunteers to teach all subjects and mentor students of all ages online or in Arusha, Tanzania. You do not need to have a teaching credential. If you have a skill or talent to teach, please join our community and share it with others.
Is my donation tax-deductible?
Yes, we are a tax-exempt charitable organization recognized by the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA). Your donations are tax deductible in Tanzania up to 2% of personal or corporate income. After we receive your books, we will send you a receipt recognizing your donation and listing the fair market value. For donors outside of Tanzania, please contact us to learn more about the options for receiving tax benefits in your country. We are 501(c)(3) pending in the US.
Why does Tanzania need books?
Most children in Tanzania don’t have books to read at home. In schools, classrooms of over 50 students often share just a single textbook. But even more than books, Tanzania needs readers. Books that sit on shelves unread or locked away because they are too valuable to lose do not serve communities. At maktaba.org our goal is to get great books off the shelves and into hearts, minds, and memories. We depend on readers like you to engage and inspire each other through book discussions, pen pals, and reading groups. Thank you!
